Historic Maps of Newcastle NSW web app
At The Spatial Lab, we're proud to provide the community access to an online mapping application to view historic maps of Newcastle. These maps were supplied by The University of Newcastle Living Histories Collection.
Key Features:
Compare historic maps to current aerials: The application provides a number of tools to compare the historic maps to the current urban environment of Newcastle. The swipe tool and map transparency allow for quick and easy comparison from old to new.
Property boundaries: Zoom in and view the current property boundaries overlaid the historic map. Searching for an address is also available. This is handy to relate historic map information to a particular property, click on the property to see address details.
Easy to use: The application is simple and easy to use, the swipe tool and layer transparency are common tools used in mapping applications. The app is not cluttered with many unnecessary tools.
Georeferenced maps: The historic maps required georeferrencing which is placing the historic map image in its the right position spatially. This is complicated by the age of the maps where the paper is deteriorating or has been rolled or folded.
Benefits:
This online tool has been developed and is hosted courtesy of The Spatial Lab. This tool will be of great benefit for researchers, historians, town planners or people interested in understanding Newcastle’s history of land uses, road and rail networks, and changes to the landforms and waterways.
The Spatial Lab's online apps are not just a tool—it's a catalyst for innovation and collaboration.
